The work with the  sheltered accommodation in Llanedeyrn started  a few months ago after the previous old peoples home closed. This all started when our church was looking at ways that we could serve the community. One member makes regular visits to see the residents to talk and pray with them. Each month a group lead a service with hymns, Bible readings, prayer and Communion. Over the years relationships with the residents and staff have grown and there are regular contributions from them in the monthly services.

Streetlife provides an evening outreach service to vulnerable women four evenings a week.

Volunteers provide the women with healthcare, snacks, a hot drink and a chat. It is hoped that by establishing relationships of trust, an opportunity for change can be offered to the women, bringing new hope and a sense of purpose.

A member of Capital Church is supporting the project by co-ordinating and developing it. Five other members are volunteers and have over the past 18 months developed good relationships with many of the women. Money has been raised to buy a purpose-built vehicle which will provide a safe place for the women to sit and chat to the volunteers. This vehicle will also serve other vulnerable groups within Cardiff: for example it is envisaged that the vehicle could be used by the Local Authority’s ‘Breakfast Run’, a project providing breakfast to rough sleepers in Cardiff.

On Monday nights two church members help run a drop-in centre which was started by a member of the church. They provide a meal, clothes, bedding and a place to chat. Also on Thursdays food clothes, bedding and tents are taken to the street sleepers. At times they are able to give advice, pray and talk about spiritual matters.

The homeless scene is a constantly changing one and very few people are seen on a regular basis. Some are in transit, some just released from prison, some move from place to place. There are many with drink and drugs problems. Life on the streets is about survival and some people are in desperate situations.
